A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM
DIRECTED BY EAMON FLACK

OVERVIEW
This sophisticated production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was first presented in December 2009 at B Sharp to a sold out season, rave reviews and crowds in stitches at this modern retelling of the classic lover’s tale. Director Eamon Flack has turned this great Shakespearean classic into a laughter filled, decadent and sad celebration Ð a party unfolding on stage, shot through with karaoke ballads and comedy. With a cast of eight (and a half), new doublings and re- ordered scenes, this is A Midsummer Night’s Dream as it’s never been done before. “This play is a vivid reminder of what it’s like to fall in love for the first timeÓ describes Eamon, ‘the hope, pain, thrill, extreme amazement, profound confusion, awful misunderstanding and brilliant aliveness Ð that’s why we’ve been putting on this play for 400 years and still haven’t got enough of it.”
MARKET APPEAL
The Dream was originally presented prior to Christmas at Belvoir St Downstairs Theatre and attracted a broad-spectrum audience appealing to young and old alike. Three distinct crowds were particularly drawn to the show; young adults who enjoyed the modern pop culture references and karaoke style moments, the theatre and Shakespeare lovers, curious to see the retelling and new reinterpretation of a classic script and the high school students who, having studied the text, were able to see a strong example of how the Shakespearean story can be translated into a successful and entertaining piece of theatre.
- It’s as if Shakespeare’s players have travelled through time and landed
in Surry Hills, drunk, horny and unafraid to rip up their lines. Sun Herald - … pleasingly ridiculous. Sydney Morning Herald
- A smart, sexy, daggy, intriguing and frequently hysterical production that takes a fresh, engaging
take whilst sticking to the heart of the play all the while. Highly recommended. The Stage Review - I left wondering if it wasn’t perhaps the best Shakespearean production I’d ever seen. M/C Reviews
- A delightful version for the young at heart. Artshub
WOYZECK
DIRECTED BY NETTA YASHCHIN

OVERVIEW
Fresh from the floors of Belvoir St Downstairs Theatre comes one of the most exciting ensemble peices of 2010.
With a wild visual aesthetic, humour, live music, dance and a superb ensemble cast, director Netta Yashchin beautifully stitches together the hallucinatory moments of Büchner’s famous unfinished play Woyzeck. Previously a member of Israel’s Itim Ensemble and founder of the Yashchin Ensemble in Adelaide, B Sharp welcomed Netta Yashchin to the Downstairs Theatre to present her interpretation of this iconic 19th century masterpiece.
MARKET APPEAL
This production sits beautifully within a festival or an adventurous season. It is young fresh and impressive. It is an extremely entertaining retelling of Buchner’s classic. Positioning the work as an exciting new Australian work will draw the right audience.
“You certainly won’t be bored by this Woyzeck…” SMH
“A chilling, at times rather bizarre, extremely relevant and thought provoking production” Arts Hub
The performers are all fantastic, and although Büchner’s vision is almost unrelentingly bleak, the play’s black humour and intriguing visuals make it uplifting too. Yaschin has also wisely retained the work’s air of mystery and kept it deliberately ambiguous. Time Out Sydney
