A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – TOUR 2011

... pleasingly ridiculous. Sydney Morning Herald

I left wondering if it wasn’t perhaps the best Shakespearean production I’d ever seen. M/C Reviews

Arts Radar brings you a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Director Eamon Flack has turned this great Shakespearean classic into a grand, decadent and sad celebration – a party unfolding on stage, shot through with karaoke ballads and comedy.

With a cast of eight (and a half), new doublings and reordered scenes, this is A Midsummer Night’s Dream as it’s never been done before. It is an exploration of a hedonistic pursuit of love, pleasure and freedom – that comes at a cost. The seasons have gone awry, the grownups are in denial, and the young are randy with hope and despair. Suddenly, in the midst of overwhelming uncertainty, four young lovers take a mighty stab at happiness.

Eamon said, ‘This play is a vivid reminder of what it’s like to fall in love for the first time – the hope, pain, thrill, extreme amazement, profound confusion, awful misunderstanding and brilliant aliveness – that’s why we’ve been putting on this play for 400 years and still haven’t got enough of it. ’

This Midsummer Night’s Dream is a theme-party about shattered innocence and the restoration of grace. Prepare for a glittering karaoke night of love ballads and curses, wedding songs and bestiality, culminating in a special nuptial performance by the acclaimed Rude Mechanicals of Peter Quince’s tragic masterpiece, Pyramus and Thisbe.

It’s as if Shakespeare’s players have travelled through time and landed in Surry Hills, drunk, horny and unafraid to rip up their lines. Sun Herald

A smart, sexy, daggy, intriguing and frequently hysterical production that takes a fresh, engaging take whilst sticking to the heart of the play all the while. Highly recommended. Australian Stage Online

My son, daughter-in-law, grand-daughter and I saw this at Glenrose Theatre. It was absolutely magic. My grand-daughter was in this production at Manly Selective Campus 2 years ago, but grandmotherly pride aside, this production by Arts Radar was absolutely brilliant. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is my favourite Shakespeare. I just love it.
BUT I wanted to take another grand-daughter to see it, but I could not get to see it at Glenrose because it closed too quickly. I need to know where it goes from there. I want to take my precious grand-daughter to see it, but we need to be able to book accommodation and make sure it does not clash with her schooling and after-school activities. Please advise the itinerary or how I can find it on the web-site.

This was awesome. True to the original but on a wackymodern bent making this highly accessible to all ages, relevant to today and so refreshing and funny
    thanks for touring!

  3. An impressive share, I recently with all this on to the friend who was simply conducting a little evaluation in this. After which he or she actually bought me personally breakfast every day since I ran across it with regard to him or her.. grin. Therefore allow me to reword which: Thnx for that deal with! But yes Thnkx with regard to spending any time to go over this, I’ve found myself strongly relating to this and really like reading through regarding this particular subject. If possible, as you grow knowledge, would you mind updating your website that has a lot more details? It is very great for me personally. Large usb upward due to this short post!
