A new cross-cultural dance-music duet by Annalouise Paul.
Game on is a fervent but humorous banter between two contemporaries. Indian musician meets contemporary dancer on stage for a jam, so what does it really take to know another’s culture? Is it about music versus dance, east versus west or simply watching and listening, but as artists go, winning audience affection takes over and playing by the rules becomes anyone’s game.
Using contemporary dance and classical Indian tabla, Game on is an interplay between two finely skilled artists, Miranda Wheen contemporary dancer and Aria® award-winning Bobby Singh on classical Indian tabla.
“Working with Annalouise over a number of years, we have slowly developed a new language, or common platform for language through which we can understand each other and freely improvise” enthuses Bobby. “I have been able to teach her the long slow cycles of classical Indian rhythms and have myself learnt how contemporary dancers compose and how to improvise in this new interpretive language.” Bobby sees the work in Game On as a new and unique way of working in contemporary dance. “It’s more like in traditional music” he explains, “where the dancer or the singer is one of the band and all are involved in leading and following, rather than where dancers perform to music that has been separately composed”.
